Illegal mining:  the challenge of Diaso

Image
Many policies have been instituted to address issues of child labour and the need for enhanced protection regimes has been stressed by all stakeholders, yet many children in the country still remain vulnerable to various forms of exploitation. Diaso, a town located in the Upper Denkyira West District, is endowed with lots of natural resources. Besides gold and other minerals, the area is also known for its timber resources and extensive cocoa farms. And instead of these resources being a blessing to the people of Diaso and other communities in Upper Denkyira West, it is gradually turning to be a curse with the livelihood of people being affected as many have involved themselves in the growing illegal mining business. Many children have also been lured to participate in the business of illegal mining or ‘galamsey’ as the lifestyles of those associated with the business is attractive and appealing. Again they are compelled to join the illegal business as the rewards are more apparent

Adaklu Traditional Council calls for removal of DCE

Image
Adaklu Traditional Council has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to sack Mr Phanuel Kadey Donkor, the District Chief of Adaklu from office for alleged persistent show of disrespect to traditional authorities in the District. Togbe Gbogbi Atsa V, President of the Council and Paramount Chief of the area at a traditional council meeting alleged that Mr Donkor on countless occasions demonstrated gross disrespect to the chiefs and maligned them on public platforms. He said his offensive conduct could no longer be countenanced by the chiefs and called for his removal, adding, “enough is enough.” The Paramount Chief said the last straw that broke the camel’s back was the DCE’s failure to make a physical appearance for the Traditional Council meeting scheduled for Monday, July 29, to discuss pertinent development challenges in the area. He alleged that the DCE peddled untruths and made damaging comments on radio “as if chieftains are a bought commodity and lacked moral reason

SOGOG calls for national cervical cancer screening programme to save women

Image
The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Ghana (SOGOG) are advocating for the establishment of a national cervical cancer screening  programme, in all health facilities at a subsidised fee. This it said, is urgently needed to detect cervical cancer in woman at its pre-cancerous states and prevent it from progressing into uncontrollable stages, so to avoid deaths. Speaking at the 10th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the organization in Accra,  Professor Alexander Tawiah Odoi, President of SOGOG said the low knowledge of the disease among the public, had made it the second most frequent cancer among women aged 15 to 44. “Current estimates indicate that every year, 3151 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer and 2119 of them die as a result,” he said. Prof. Odoi observed that improving reproductive healthcare in Ghana entailed the expansion, redesign and re-allocation of resources to change social and cultural perceptions about reproductive health interventions. Tree planting: a remedy for perennial flooding in Ghana

Image
Accra, Ghana’s seat of government is grappled with perennial flooding during heavy down pours. Floods have become a usual phenomenon. In June 2015, Accra floods resulted in at least 25 deaths directly from the flooding, while a petrol station explosion, partly caused by the flooding, killed at least 200 more people. Two years down the line, heavy rains left parts of Accra inaccessible again, resulting in heavy traffic on the roads in the city and also a halt in commercial activities as markets were flooded and workers trapped. Recently in Takoradi, heavy rains witnessed last month within the Metropolis destroyed property and also claimed the lives of five children in Ngyeresia, a fishing community in the Metropolis. The home, accommodating six children could no longer stand the wrath of the more than five hours torrential and non-stop rains and therefore caved in on the children, killing five of them instantly and leaving one in a critical condition. The situation was not different

Kunda Junction celebrates ODF status

Image
Farm gates were shut, stalls and markets closed, as children, young adults and the aged in Kunda Junction in the Krachi East Municipality of Oti Region stormed the streets, to celebrate Open Defecation Free (ODF) status. The street procession amidst traditional music was also in celebration of the commissioning of a borehole for the community by World Vision Ghana. Women appeared chief celebrants, some drumming and others dancing with babies strapped at their back at the community square after the street carnival. About an hour into the celebration, neigbouring communities joined the fray, with wild jubilation defying earlier downpour. Mr Bernard Tafu, acting Herdman of the community, said the whole day was for drumming and dancing and that they had invited neighbouring communities to rejoice with them to thank God and World Vision for giving them water and making the community open defecation free. Mr Joseph Dah, Krachi East Municipal Environmental Health Officer, who was visibly

Chief urges farmers to embrace climate-smart farming

Image
Nana Adu Mensah, the Chief of Kumasi-Amakom, has urged farmers living in communities dotted around the Bosomtwe Lake, to embrace climate-smart agricultural practices, to help protect the only natural lake in the country. He said by doing that, it would have the multiple advantage of not only protecting the lake but also reduce operational cost, boost crop yield and combat climate change. Climate-smart agriculture is an integrated approach to managing landscapes, cropland, livestock, forests and fisheries, that addresses the interlinked challenges of food security and climate change. Nana Asare was speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting on the proposed Lake Bosomtwe Landscape Restoration Project to be spearheaded by the Asantehene, Otumfour Osei Tutu II, in collaboration with Oheneba Poku Foundation. Traditional leaders of 23 communities in the Lake Bosomtwe basin, representatives of state agencies such as Water Resources Commission (WRC), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and othe

Police personnel must be agents of change – COP

Image
Commissioner of Police (COP) Ken Yeboah, has asked newly trained personnel of the police service to be agents of change. He said unprofessional conducts of some personnel had affected the public confidence in the service and has brought their corporate image into disrepute. Mr Yeboah, who was speaking at a passing out parade of 141 police recruits in Ho, called for change of attitude to reverse the erroneous image. “You are passing out at the time the service is undergoing reformation, and as you step out to discharge your duties, see yourselves as change agents,” he stated. He urged them to strive and uplift the image of their institution, by engaging in professional acts and conducts which will increase public confidence and foster coherent partnership between the police and the public. “Members of the public must feel the sense of mission of the service to prevent crime, detection, apprehension and prosecution of offenders consistent with the law,” he added. Mr Yeboah charged

High aflatoxins in cereals contributes to male sterility and liver cancers – Prof Awuah

Image
Men who consume high contents of aflatoxin in maize, sorghum, millet and groundnuts have high risk of male sterility and liver cancers, says  Professor Richard Tuyee Awuah, of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). Aflatoxins are potent carcinogens produced by the fungus aspergillus flavus and several other related species, which are common in warm and humid environment. Prof Awuah, who is at the Department of Crop Science and Soil Sciences at the KNUST, said women who consume high contents of aflatoxin also expose themselves to several female reproductive problems. Research and field demonstrations show that maize, groundnuts, millet and sorghum produced by farmers in the country contained high aflatoxins. Speaking at the opening session of a business forum in Techiman in the Bono East Region, Prof Awuah said corn dough contains high contents of aflatoxin, hence the need to minimise consumption of “kenkey” to save lives. The court also ordered that they should report at the Kumasi Central Police station every Monday, pending trial. Counsel for Abdul Nasir, and Seidu, Mr Andrew K. Vortia said they had a motion on notice for bail pending trial, which they filed on July 5. He said the facts as stated by the prosecution merely stated that his clients were mentioned by the accused persons as having taken part in the plan, saying their names were not mentioned by the accused persons. He told the court that apart from his clients, there were other six accused persons, and the court had not been told who in particular mentio

Government to renegotiate ‘take-or-pay’ contracts in the energy sector

Image
The Government will renegotiate all take-or-pay contracts in the energy sector, by converting them to take-and-pay contracts to help save the sector and prevent citizens from consistently paying energy they had not used. Mr Ken Ofori-Atta, the Minister of Finance said there was the need to renegotiate the contract to avert the impending huge cost it would bring to the country in the upcoming years, noting that, currently, the country’s installed capacity was almost double the peak demand. Mr Ofori-Atta stated in the presentation of the Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review of the 2019 Budget Statement and Economic Policy & Supplementary Estimates in Parliament, in Accra. He said notable among the transactions was that, 2,300 MegaWatts of the installed capacity had been contracted on a take-or-pay basis, adding that, on the average, “less than 40 per cent of the contracted take-or-pay capacity is actually used, meaning that we are basically throwing away money by paying for the remaining

A total 794,899 enrolled on Free SHS – Minister

Image
Government’s Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme has enrolled a total of 794,899 students since it started two years ago. In September 2019, the third cohort of Senior High School students will be enrolled making it all for free for the first time in our history. Mr Ken Ofori-Atta Minister of Finance said this on Monday when delivering the Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review of the 2019 Budget Statement and Economic Policy and Supplementary Estimates in parliament in Accra. He said the successful implementation of the Free SHS programme had resulted in an increase in demand for secondary education. To meet this demand and ensure that no child is left behind, the Minister said government introduced the double track school calendar as a temporary measure in 394 Senior High Schools and employed additional 8,872 teachers in order to ensure effective teaching and learning in the schools. He said in order to facilitate the phasing out of the double track system, the government initia

GMA warns of imminent return to “cash and carry” over NHIS debts

Image
The Ghana Medical Association (GMA), has called on the Government and National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), to as a matter of urgency pay all monies owed the various health facilities with immediate effect. Health facilities would be compelled to initiate cash and carry as a mode of payment in their quest to ensure continuous service delivery as well as to forestall their collapse. Addressing the media at a press conference at the end of the 19th Public Lecture and National Executive Council (NEC) Meeting in Cape Coast on Sunday, Dr. Frank Ankobea, President of the GMA, noted with great concern the effect of the NHlA’s failure to pay health facilities, both public and private for services rendered from September 2018 to May 2019. The GMA also expressed worry about the surge in teenage pregnancies in the country and called on stakeholders to institute practical measures based on scientific evidence to address the root causes of teenage pregnancy. “It is important that, as a co

Making retail medicine outlets a catalyst for malaria case management  in Ghana

Image
The retail medicine outlet is one of the turfs that may decide how fast Ghana can move from the ranks of the 11 malaria-burdened countries to the malaria elimination stage. Current global data from the World Health Organisation (WHO) paints a gloomy picture of Ghana’s malaria control efforts. Approximately 70 per cent of the world’s malaria burden is said to be concentrated in just 11 countries including Ghana. The rest of the countries are Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania and India. Pharmacies and over-the-counter (OTC) drug facilities provide the channels for accessing malaria treatment but it appears some of these facilities are difficult terrains for controlling the disease. These drug outlets occupy a very strategic position in bringing basic health care to the door steps of many households and local communities because of various reasons such as accessibility, affordability, and con

Refund our insurance deductions or we withdraw our services – GNAT

Image
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has threatened to withdraw services of members by September 1, 2019 if the Ghana Education Service (GES) does not refund the insurance policy deductions made from their salaries. The decision disclosed at a news conference in Accra was made by GNAT in collaboration with the National Association of Graduate Teachers and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers-Ghana. Mr David Ofori Acheampong, the General Secretary of GNAT said the decision followed a collaboration made by the GES and SIC Life Insurance company, to enroll all GES staff onto a life insurance policy. He said by this, GH¢10.00 was to be deducted from the salary of every teacher every month from June 2018 to July 2019. Meanwhile, he said, even though the association in 2017 was engaged in a conversation by the GES in that regard, an approval was not given by members of the association to accept enrollment onto the policy. “We drew their attention to the fact that insurance p
