The Agona East District Directorate of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has undertaken the planting of acacia trees on school compounds and in communities to serve as windbreak. Mr Dennis Armah-Frempong, the District Chief Executive (DCE) joined the officers of NADMO to also plant more than 100 trees along the banks of Ayensu River on the Agona Asafo/Kwesitwikrom road. The 18th Annual Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report, released by the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo on Thursday, has upgraded Ghana from a Tier 2 Watch List to a Tier 2 ranking, based on recent government efforts to address the phenomenon. The TIP report is an annual report that assesses the efforts of governments around the world to fight human trafficking, including in the United States. A statement issued to the GNA on Friday said the 2018 TIP Report noted the Government of Ghana’s increased efforts to combat human trafficking in 2017, including implementing a national anti-trafficking plan, prosecuting and convicting an increased number of labour and sex traffickers, and increasing cooperation across anti-trafficking government agencies. This is based on the findings of a trial test conducted by the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), in collaboration with the National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) on cement and mud-plastered walls in some sentinel sites. The Committee that investigated the recent disturbances involving Tumu Police and youth of the town, which claimed two lives, has presented its report to the Upper West Regional Minister, Alhaji Sulemana Alhassan. The 43-page document among others catalogued some causes of the disturbances and made observations based on evidence gathered. The report also made vast recommendations on how to prevent future occurrences of such riots. Mr Baah Forson Agyapong, who chaired the six-member committee and presented the document to the Regional Minister, described the report as a comprehensive one whose recommendations if implemented to the latter, would settle the matter amicably and prevent any potential incidence. The Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG) with a network of 332 health facilities handles on the average 6 million out-patient department (OPD) cases and 500,000 admissions with the receipt of about 120,000 new births and safe deliveries annually. The Ministry of the Interior has renewed curfew hours imposed on four townships in two regions. They are; Kpatinga and its environs from 1200 midnight to 0400 hours and Bimbilla Township from 1800 hours to 0600 hours, both of the Northern Region, effective Friday, June 29, 2018. Others are; Alavanyo and Nkonya Townships in the Volta Region from 1800 hours to 0600 hours, effective Sunday, July 1, 2018. A statement signed by Mr Ambrose Dery, the Sector Minister and copied to the Ghana News Agency on Friday said the renewal of the curfew hours was upon the advice of their various Regional Security Councils and by Executive Instrument. It reminded the public that the ban on carrying arms, ammunition or any offensive weapons was still in force and any person found with any arms or ammunition would be arrested and prosecuted. The statement urged the people to exercise restraint in the face of the challenges confronting them and should use non-violent means to ensure peace in the areas.

The Creg Afful Foundation, an anti-narcotic organization has appealed to government to intensify the formulation and implementation of policies against the use of illegal drugs among the youth. The appeal forms part of the Foundation’s campaign against drug abuse among Ghanaians especially the youth. Mr Michael Cregg Afful, Executive Director of the Foundation, made the appeal in an interview with the Ghana News Agency during this year’s International Day Against Drug Abuse. Mr Afful, observed that the high rate of drug abuse among the youth was worrying as it led them to indulge in social vices such as armed robbery. He said while some smoked marijuana, and other substances, some also mixed narcotic drugs and tramadol among others with energy and alcoholic drinks. He stated that even though his outfit was aware of the fact that it would be impossible to totally rid the country of drug addicts, government and other stakeholders could help reduce it drastically. The Ghana Aquaculture Association (GAA), an umbrella body of aquaculture industry, says tilapia produced in the country is safe for consumption. “We want to assure the fish eating public of this country that your locally produced Tilapia fish is healthy and absolutely safe to consume with no risk whatsoever to any body’s health.” Mr Peter Angelo Habib, Executive Director, Government Relations, GAA, who said this at a News conference held in Accra on Friday explained that the Tilapia Lake Virus (TiLV) was not present in Ghana. Total Ghana Limited on Friday, commissioned its first solar-powered service station in the country with a 35 kilowatt capacity, at the Tema main harbour. The solar-powered station has a total of 225m2 solar panels comprising of 165m2 on the station’s shop and restaurant building, and 60 m2 on the pump island canopy. The Management of Crime Check Foundation (CCF), a Prison NGO, has facilitated the release of two female inmates of the Kumasi Central Prison. The two; Ama Nima, a Sanitation worker and Madam Akosua Owusua, a Petty Trader, were jailed for different offences. Madam Ama, who is heavily pregnant, was convicted to a fine of GH¢1,200.00, or in default serve a five-year jail term for biting the hand of a family member during a fight. On the other hand, Madam Akosua, was also accused of stealing items belonging to the owner of a house, she took care off. The court convicted Akosua to a fine of GH¢3,600.00 or in default, a four-year jail term. Mr. Ahensah Asum-Kwarteng, the acting Country Director of Plan Ghana International, has called for the banks’ to bring down the cost of borrowing to aid businesses to thrive. He said the current high interest charges on loans were not helpful to efforts at growing businesses – to expand and create jobs for the people, particularly, the youth. He was speaking at a day’s “market scan assessment” workshop held at Abesim, near Sunyani. The number of deaths resulting from drug use is on the increase, according to the latest report of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). The 2018 World  Drug Report says the percentage of deaths attributable to drug use is still high among all age groups. The Report asserts that though people who use drugs die prematurely as an extreme consequence of drug use, determining the extent of mortality attributed to drug use is however, not straightforward: deaths caused by drug use can be directly related to drug use disorders, such as overdose, or can be indirectly an increase in unintentional injuries, which include drug-related deaths, it indicates. A fetish priest who sold an AK 47 rifle with 15 rounds  of ammunition property of the Ghana Police, to a Togolese businessman has been jailed 10 years by a Circuit Court at Aflao. Elvis Apedo, aka Gborgbor, 30, pleaded not guilty to stealing, but the court presided over by Mr. Ali Baba Abature thought otherwise after trial. Prosecuting, Detective Inspector Michael Akemo, told the court that sometime in 2015, seven inmates escaped from the Police cell at Denu under the cover of darkness making away with two AK 47 rifles with 50 rounds of ammunition. He said KwakuAzasu, aka Voyo, leader and mastermind of the escape led his colleagues to the house of Apedo at Gomashie-Tagba in Aflao, where he performed rituals for the suspects to fortify them spiritually against being re-arrested. Mr. Akemo said on Apedo’s advice, the rifles were kept in the shrine for so called safe keeping before the suspects fled into hiding. Ghana’s economy grew provisionally at 6.8 per cent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2018 compared to 6.7 per cent in the same period last year, Acting Government statistician, Mr  Baah Wadieh said on Wednesday. Speaking at a press conference, Mr Wadieh said the industry sector recorded the highest growth of 9.6 per cent; the services sector was up with 5.2 per cent and agriculture with 2.8 per cent. The quarter-on-quarter seasonally adjusted growth rate was 1.5 per cent, down from 2.1 per cent in the last three months of 2017. He said non-oil growth for the period stood at 5.4 percent year-on-year compared to 4 per cent last year. The sectoral distribution of the Gross Domestic Product shares in the first quarter, saw Services taking 60.6 per cent, followed by industry at 27.5 per cent and agriculture at 11.9 per cent, Mr Wadieh said. The Narcotics Control Board (NACOB) has cautioned the public, especially the youth, against the excessive abuse of tramadol and cough mixtures containing components of codeine, as they give similar effects of narcotics substances. In a statement issued to the GNA on Wednesday, to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (World Drug Day), NACOB said drug trafficking was known to fuel money laundering, terrorism, corruption and transnational organized crime, which has become a problem for the world. The World Drug Report (UNODC) 2017 estimates that about 190,000 people lost their lives to drug abuse and a higher number of them also suffered from drug use disorders and its related diseases such as HIV, Hepatitis B &C and Tuberculosis.
