Hundreds of National Democratic Congress (NDC) members and sympathizers Sunday ignored church services in commemoration of the 31st December Revolution day in Ho. Many churches remained closed, with a few opened ones still empty as at 0800 hrs. The Ghana News Agency gathered that some churches declared “one service”, rescheduled to start after 1000 hrs. Sympathizers and party faithful, young and the very old, poured onto the streets of Ho as early as 0500 hrs for a health walk heralding the short celebration. Professor Felix Dapare Dakora, President of the African Academy of Sciences (AAS), has called for the end of what he described as “Agro-Imperialism,” where massive chunk of Africa’s arable lands are sold for pittance to foreign grabbers, if the continent was to feed its projected 2.5 billion population by 2050. He appealed to the African Union Commission to curtail this emerging ‘cruelty’ by promulgating a continental legal framework to restrain the outright buyouts for short-to medium term leases to forestall the unwarranted land resource grabbing phenomenon. “Africa occupies 64 percent of global arable land and yet the hungriest,” he said that loss of such a vital resource of land could jeopardise the food security aspirations of the continent. The Customs division of the Ghana Revenue Authority on Friday destroyed 35 packages of prohibited items intercepted within the year. Mr Ebenezer Kenney, Chief Revenue Officer, Preventive, at the Volta Regional office of the Ghana Revenue Authority, said the items included hundreds of compressed slabs of Indian Hemp and medicaments. He said the exercise, as part of the GRA’s preventive duty, was aimed towards safeguarding public health and safety by filtering out contrabands. The items were incinerated at a land fill site in the presence of officers of the Food and Drugs Authority, Environmental Health Protection Agency and the security services. Seven young men are in the grips of the Asankragwa District Police Command for alleged robbery. They are Ayipah, 21, Emmanuel Sonata, 22, Silas Bota,24, Amos Coffie, 21, Thomas Adu, 20, Kwabena Ayarko, 23 and Daniel Obiri Korang, 24, all small scale miners. Briefing the Ghana News Agency, the Asankragwa District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Mr Kingsley Owusu-Bempah said on December 24, at about 2130 hrs, Mr Kwabena Yeboah, a businessman at Asankragwa came to the charge office in a Mitsubishi Pick-up with bullet holes in the wind screen and reported that whilst on his way from Moseaso to Asankragwa, about seven armed men ordered him to stop. He said when Mr Yeboah failed to comply, the armed men started firing gun shots and some of the bullets hit his wind screen but he managed to escape. The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has cautioned manufacturers and importers against the importation, sale and distribution of unregistered products. A statement signed by Mrs Delese A.A Darko, Ag. Chief Executive Officer of FDA and copied to the Ghana News Agency, reminded all manufacturers and importers that the importation, sale and distribution of unregistered regulated products contravened the Public Health Act 2012, Act 851.   The Act indicates that a person shall not manufacture, import, export, distribute, sell or supply or expose any regulated product for sale unless the Authority has registered the product. These products include alcoholic beverages, orthodox medicines, food supplements, herbal medicines, cosmetics, medical devices, household chemicals, Tobacco and Tobacco products. The statement said effective January 1, 2018 the FDA would strictly apply the appropriate administrative charges for the importation, sale and distribution of unregistered regulated products

Two persons have been put before an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly robbing a mechanic of his motor bike at gun point at Ablorman, near Amasaman in Accra. Luck however eluded Joseph Ahorde, a mason who left his mobile at the scene and same was used to trace him at his hideout in Ablorman, near Amasaman. Ahorde then confessed to committing the robbery with Sulley Karim, a mechanic who was armed with a pump action gun on the day of the incident. Charged with conspiracy to rob and robbery, Ahorde and Karim have pleaded not guilty. The court presided over by Mrs. Abena Oppong Adjin-Doku remanded them into Police custody to reappear on January 12 . True to its unwavering determination to protect and promote public safety, the Central Regional Office of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has extended its public education to cover homes in the Upper Denkyira West District. The move formed part of the FDA’s stepped-up surveillance to reach every corner in the Region to check the illegal activities of some food and drug vendors and peddlers who were bent on making huge profits at the expense of the quality of health of the populace. The Upper East Regional Technical Coordinator of the Ghana AIDS Commission, Dr Gifty Apiung Aninanya, has expressed worry that stigma and discrimination were still the major challenges in the prevention of the HIV transmission and provision of proper health care to clients.  Stigma and discrimination she said, came in different forms, which increases the burden of the people living with the disease. Dr Aninanya made this known during an advocacy workshop organized by the Commission for religious leaders, herbalists and media personnel, aimed at strengthening the Commission’s working relationships with its implementing partners. A scrap dealer who is accused of pretending to be a Police officer at Kantamanto has appeared before an Accra Circuit Court. Fuseini Musuna who was charged with falsely pretending to a public officer pleaded guilty. According to him he told the crowd that he could be a police officer in order to save himself from being beaten by the mob. The court after listening to the explanation entered a plea of not guilty. Musuna is also facing an additional charge of use of narcotic drugs. The Upper West Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has set up a Regional Security Fund to bolster activities of the Council to deal with robbery and general insecurity in Ghana’s poorest region. The Security Council has also programmed to sensitise a number of communities, particularly those along the highways, by assisting them to set up Neighbourhood Watch Committees to help stem rising criminal activities in the Region. “REGSEC has set up a Regional security fund to support the series of activities that have been lined up to deal with insecurity in the region,” Alhaji Alhassan Sulemana, the Regional Minister who is also Chairman of REGSEC,  told Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) members Wednesday. He said a committee has been established by REGSEC to manage the fund and are expected to report to the RCC from time to time about it utilisation and sustenance. A statement signed by Mr Ambrose Dery, the Sector Minister and copied to the Ghana News Agency on Thursday, said the renewal of the curfew was upon the advice of the Northern Regional Security Council and by Executive Instrument. It called on the people to exercise restraint in the face of the challenges confronting them and use non-violent means to ensure peace in the area. The statement warned them of the continued ban on carrying arms, ammunition or any offensive weapons and that any persons found with any arms or ammunition would be arrested and prosecuted. The West African Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) – Ghana, has held a second dialogue on the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights (VPS) in the extractive industry with stakeholders within the Newmont Ahafo Mine catchment area. Twenty participants comprising representatives from the Newmont Gold Ghana Limited – Ahafo Mine, the regional Peace Council, traditional and community youth leaders, civil society organisations, the Police, women groups and the media attended. The one-day event was to review the threats identified in the last dialogue and to identify the current ones to design strategies to mitigate them. Mr. Albert Yelyang, the National Network Coordinator of WANEP-Ghana made this known in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), after the programme on Monday, at Kenyasi Number Two in the Asutifi North District of Brong-Ahafo Region.
