Investing Ghana’s petroleum funds in low profit investment meaningless – Economist

Image
Dr. Eric Osei-Assibey, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana, says it is unnecessary for Ghana to keep its Heritage Funds in an investment product with 2.25 per cent interest rate while borrowing at over 10 per cent interest rate.   Dr Osei-Assibey, an Economist and Adjunct Fellow of the Institute of Economic Affairs, said the nation had invested about $625 million of the country’s petroleum funds in the USA at an interest rate of 2.25 percent, which had yielded a paltry $25 million within a period of five years. He said the country’s petroleum funds had not yielded the needed dividends in view of the low profit return, therefore it was time government took a decision on the petroleum funds that would inure to the benefit of Ghanaians. Dr Osei-Assibey, said this when he chaired the presentation of the outcome of the P-TRAC Index Report in Accra, on Tuesday The IEA’s P-TRAC Index project, which started in 2011, provides quantitative indicators to track progress in the govern

Okudzeto accuses NDC, NPP of conspiracy for failure to pass RTI Bill

Image
Mr Samuel Awuku Okudzeto, a member of the Council of State, has criticised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for conspiring to prevent the passage of the Right to Information (RTI) Bill into law. He said the two major parties’ members of Parliament had dominated the Legislature for the past 25 years since the country returned to constitutional rule and, thus, described their actions as a “conspiracy theory” meant to deny Ghanaians access to critical information. “None of the two political parties want transparency, otherwise they would all have ensured the passage of the RTI Law because all the countries around us have it,” he stated. Mr Okudzeto, an astute lawyer and former Chairman of the Public Account Committee of Parliament, made the remarks when contributing to a discussion on transparency in petroleum resource management, during the presentation of the 2017 Petroleum Transparency and Accountability (P-TRAC) Index Report by the Institute

The eleven member executive is chaired by Bishop Richard Ahiagbedey, head of Adonai Minstries. Moody’s predicts low profits for Ghanaian banks

Image
Ghana’s 36 commercial banks may have to do a bit more this year if they must return to efficiency and profitability following declined revenue in 2016 and 2017, the ratings agency, Moody’s has said in a report copied to ghanabusiness.com. The research arm of the agency, Moody’s Investors Service in its latest report on Monday pointed out, “continued slowdown in the growth of bank loans and advances in 2017”. This means, fewer people; either individuals or companies took loans from the banks, perhaps, due to High Interest Rates (HIR). “We expect the muted loan growth to reduce Ghanaian banks’ revenue, straining their efficiency ratios and profitability.” says Akintunde Majekodunmi, vice president and banking analyst at Moody’s’. The report corroborated Ghana’s own central bank’s assertion contained in the summary of economic and financial data released just last Friday, that, loans and advances grew by just 5.9 per cent in 2017, compared with 18.3 per cent in 2016 and 24.9 per cent i

MESTI/GIZ holds forum on sustainable plastic waste management

Image
Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, the Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI) has advised Ghanaians to minimise their use of plastic products, and substitute them with degradable materials. He said since plastic was bio-non-degradable (do not decompose), they negatively affect the environment, destroying fertile lands and aquatic resources, polluting the air with poisonous gasses that causes severe damages to both human and animal health. Prof. Frimpong-Boateng said it was estimated that by 2050, the oceans would contain more plastic than fish by weight, adding that its use in many developing countries including Ghana, had increased much more than the world’s average because of rapid urbanisation and economic development. The Minister who was addressing participants at a stakeholders’ forum on sustainable plastic waste management, organised by the GIZ in collaboration with MESTI in Accra  on Tuesday , said the amount of plastic waste being generated glo

IEA calls for passage of RTI Bill

Image
The Institute of Economic Affairs, a policy think tank and research institution, has asked the government to pass the Right to Information (RTI) Bill into law to enhance transparency and accountability in the petroleum resource management. Presenting the outcome of the 2017 Petroleum Transparency and Accountability (P-TRAC) Index Report in Accra,  on Tuesday , Professor John Asafu-Adjaye, a Senior Research Fellow at the IEA, said the passage of the RTI Bill into law would improve disclosure of information on the award of contracts and licences in the oil and gas sector. He cited the recent petroleum agreement signed between Ghana and Exxon Mobil of the United States to undertake oil and gas exploration in the Deep Tano Basin as a case in point, which was shrouded in secrecy because details of the contract was not made public.  The Report also called for the Marine Pollution and the Ghana Extractive Industries Transparency bills to be presented to Parliament for passage into law.  T

Demolish Indian hemp camps nationwide – Former Minister

Image
Mr Kwadwo Adjei-Darko, a former Minister of Local Government and  Rural Development has appealed for the demolishing of Indian hemp camps in the country to save the lives of adolescents who are the future leaders.  He stressed the need for the Police Administration and the Narcotics Control Board to embark on a national operation to demolish such camps popularly called “weed bases” and secretly set up in various communities across the country by illegal drug peddlers and addicts. This has over the years drawn many youth into smoking the drug and destroyed their lives. Mr Adjei-Darko made the appeal at a ceremony to inaugurate and hand over a Junior High School Complex constructed by the Council of Brong-Ahafo Association of North America (COBAANA) to the Ayakomaso Methodist Basic School in the Sunyani West District to support formal education services delivery in the area.  The facility, estimated at the cost US$100,000 consists of a three-unit classroom block, an office, a dining

Hydroquinone in cosmetic products cause kidney and liver diseases

Image
The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA),  on Tuesday  affirmed that the nationwide ban on import and sale of cosmetic products containing hydroquinone chemicals is still in force. It therefore urged the general public to assist the Authority to help rid-off such products from the market. Hydroquinone is a skin lightener used in many whitening creams and dark mark fade treatments. It reduces the production of melanin in one’s skin and good for fading hyper-pigmentation, acne marks, sun spots, and other skin discoloration issues. But, according to FDA cosmetic products which contained hydroquinone cause kidney and liver diseases, skin cancer, bad body odour, stretch marks and other infections and also linked to some cases of diabetes and hypertension.
