TMA and TWMA clash over sewage treatment plant

Image
The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) and the newly-created Tema West Municipal Assembly (TWMA) have locked horns over ownership and management of the Borteyman Sewage treatment plant. The sewage plant, which is currently managed by the TMA, serves most communities in Tema and its environs, receives sewage collected daily in cesspit tankers from households and emptied for onward treatment. It will be recalled that in March this year, the TWMA was inaugurated after it was carved out of the TMA as a move to deepen the decentralization system and to strengthen government’s resolve to spread development across the country through local governance. Several months after it was inaugurated, members of the assembly are alleging that the TMA was not making conscious efforts at releasing assets to the Assembly including the sewage treatment plant located at Borteyman in the Tema West Municipality. A visit to the treatment plant showed some heavily built men supposedly assigned to the facility

JTI Director calls on legal practitioners to protect rights of children

Image
The Director of Judicial Training Institute (JTI), Justice Dennis Adjei has called judges and magistrates to ensure that the rights and welfare of children are protected when they appear before courts. He said, in the process of taking evidence judges and magistrates must ensure that children are not intimidated in any form as such acts defeat the purpose of establishing the Children’s Act. He said the Children’s Act was enacted largely in consonance with the Constitution to ensure the welfare of the child, hence going contrary to the provisions would imply that judges and magistrates have failed to live by what the Constitution enjoined them to do. Mr Adjei said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the sidelines of a sensitization workshop for judges and magistrates on the role of security agencies in protecting the rights of children. It was organised by the Legal Resources Centre (LRC), with support from the European Union (EU), under a project the Centre is

GBA must lead discussions on enacting Paralegal Act-CHRI

Image
The Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) Report on “Turn-around Time in Criminal Justice Administration in Ghana” has recommended that the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) leads discussions on enacting and enforcing a Paralegal Act in Ghana. The Report indicates that this would help improve access to justice delivery in the country. A paralegal is an individual qualified by education, training or work experience, who is employed or retained by a lawyer, law office, corporation, governmental agency, or other entity who performs specifically delegated substantive legal work for which a lawyer is responsible. The Executive Director of Legal Aid Commission, Alhassan Yahaya Seini who formally launched the Report in Accra, said in most instances people who were victims of prolonged pre-trial detentions were individuals who could not afford the lawyer’s services. The Report discuses an evidence-based average turn-around time for cases referred by the police to the Attorney General’s (AG

VW looks to the future, but faces legal battles from past scandals

Image
Full steam ahead to the future – with electricity: After the diesel scandal, Volkswagen is going on the offensive. But the past is casting a shadow over the future. The legal consequences of the diesel emissions scandal still weigh heavily on the German carmaker. Pouring billions of investments into the future of cars, charging ahead with an electric car offensive, and with major plans for fully networked vehicles, Volkswagen is dead-set on looking forward. At the same time, the car giant is again heading for record-high deliveries despite setbacks in September and October from complications regarding a new test standard. All of this could make one nearly forget that the diesel emission scandal involving millions of manipulated diesel engines will keep VW busy for a long time yet. The list of legal battles facing the company is a long one. Here is a breakdown VW’s legal problems: INVESTOR SUITS: The diesel emissions scandal has already cost VW a good 27 billion euros (30.5 billion

Two NGO ships carrying 47 rescued migrants stranded on Mediterranean

Another two migrant rescue ships run by German non-governmental organizations were stranded in the Mediterranean this weekend with no country willing to take them in, leading to demands for action. The Sea-Watch 3, run by NGO Sea-Watch, has been stranded on the Mediterranean for over a week with more than 30 migrants on board. Another ship from the NGO Sea-Eye picked up a further 17 people who had been stranded on a fishing boat on Saturday. Both ships are searching for a safe port. Sea-Watch posted on Twitter that it was time for “the German government to take responsibility.” A spokesman for the group, Ruben Neugebauer, said that the Sea-Watch 3 was flying under a Dutch flag and was currently just south of Malta. He also said that the situation on board was stable, but that changing weather conditions next week meant the ship needed to find a port soon. “We absolutely need a solution in this year,” he said. Ablekuma North Municipal Assembly to improve revenue generation

Image
The Ablekuma North Municipal Assembly has mapped out strategies to improve its revenue generation in 2019. This is because despite the tremendous efforts made by the Finance and Administration sub-committee of the assembly and management, its revenue projections for 2018 were not met. The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Kofi Ofori stated this in Accra during the Second Ordinary Meeting of the assembly. Some of the strategies included; the printing of the assembly’s own revenue bills, up-dating of the revenue database, engagement of some revenue collection firms, zoning the Municipality into revenue blocks and procurement of a 15-seater revenue mobilisation and sanitation bus. Besides that, Mr. Ofori said, public education and other engagements for the citizens to appreciate the need to collectively support the newly created assembly to be financially strong to bring the much needed development to the assembly will be employed. As at November 30, 2018 Mr. Ofori said, the assembly w

Respect for socio-cultural values could minimise corruption – Prof. Nketia

Image
Emeritus Professor Joseph Hanson Nketia, a renowned Music Professor, said corruption could be minimised if Ghanaians respected and practiced the country’s socio-cultural values. “Whilst our socio-cultural values promote acts of kindness and consideration, these have been abused and gradually evolved into acts of corruption,” he said. Prof. Nketsia said this in Accra on Friday at this year’s Annual Prestigious Lecture series organised by the Distinguished Scholars of Africa. The lecture is an annual event that seeks to promote and uphold national development. Prof. Nketia, who chaired the event, said the socio-cultural values of Ghana frowned upon acts that robbed the nation of its due returns and in effect, stalled socio-economic progress. He said traditionally, Ghanaians had always liked to show sympathy towards ill placed people and would typically go quite far to do that, adding; “Nowadays, the motive is no longer genuine kindness, but a hidden agenda to gain wrongfully.” Ther

According to him, out of the nearly 13 million people who were eligible to work, just two million, representing 15 per cent, have jobs that could be described as decent in relative terms. Mr Nambiar said the five-star hotel was committed to sustaining a luxury brand ‘with an European flair and a Ghanaian heart’. Their efforts, he said, were paying off as the Hotel continued to receive covetous industry awards from the Sub-Region. “We have very loyal customers who come back again and again,” he said. “We write to them and they also give us feedback. We have focused group discussions and they give us suggestions on how what we can do to make them happier.” The prospects of the Hotel in the coming years, he said, were bright as foreign bus
