1D1F projects to create 2,000 jobs in Asuogyaman

Image
Three factories  are to be established in the Asuogyaman District  under the One District One Factory programme  of the government . The projects are expected to improve on local food production in the district and create 2,000 direct jobs in the district. Disclosing this to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), the Asuogyaman District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Samuel Kwame Agyekum said under the project, a poultry processing factory would be established at Adjena to provide employment for over 300 people, a piggery and a pork processing factory would be established at Nkwakubew to employ 500 people and 1000 jobs would be provided by a paint factory at Mpakadan. Nkoranza North pleads for fruit processing factory

Image
Madam Gifty Akorsah Arthur, the Nkoranza North District Chief Executive (DCE), has expressed upset about the situation where fruits produced in large quantities in the area go to waste, something that has become a huge disincentive to farmers. The situation could not continue – there was an urgent need to establish a fruit processing factory. This, she added, would not only assure the farmers of a ready market but ensure value addition.  The district is popular for mangoes and watermelon production. The DCE was contributing to discussions at an open forum jointly organized by the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC) and the Institute of Financial and Economic Journalists (IFEJ) at Nkoranza. This was done with support from the German Development Corporation (GIZ) under its good governance project. The goal was to engage the people on how the nation’s oil revenue had been managed over the last seven years and the benefits to them. Madam Akorsah Arthur called for bus

They also called on government to make agricultural inputs available to farmers on time to plant at the right time for improved yields. They also called on government to facilitate market for agricultural produce by encouraging companies to buy farm produce from local farmers. These proposals were arrived at by the stakeholders at a Regional Consultative Forum on the 2019 Budget organized in Tamale by SEND Ghana with support from the World Bank. MTN Ghana to raise GH¢3.5b in IPO

Image
MTN Ghana as part of measures to fulfilling its 4G license requirement is transferring 35 per cent stake to Ghanaians through an initial public offering. The Company seeks to raise GH¢3.47 billion at 0.75 cedis per share in the sale of over four billion ordinary shares to the public. Mr Ebenezer Asante, the Chief Executive Officer, MTN Ghana, speaking at the Launch of its Initial Public Offering (IPO) expressed the hope that the transaction would have a positive impact on the country’s local market, expanding the frontiers of inclusion. He said MTN listing its shares on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) was to meet conditions agreed to in 2015, when the company acquired the right to use 4G spectrum that could carry high-speed mobile data for customers. “Our regulator made it a license requirement for MTN Ghana, which we complied with because we believed the good people of Ghana deserved the privilege of owning a part of MTN,” he added. Minority tells government to stop using earmarked funds to finance free SHS

Image
The Minority in Parliament has criticized what they say is deliberate diversion of earmarked funds by the government to finance the free Senior High School (SHS) programme. They asked that the Finance Minister avoid doing anything to circumvent the guidelines in the Petroleum Revenue Management Act. Mr. Ato Forson, their Spokesperson on Finance, warned that they could be heading to court to stop any breaches of the law. He was speaking to journalists after the House had debated the report of the Finance Committee on the 2017 Petroleum Fund. The Act stipulates that 70 per cent of the Fund should go into Annual Budget Funding Amount (ABFA) and out of that 70 per cent should be dedicated to infrastructure development. The remaining 30 per cent should be used on other priority areas – goods and services. The Ghana Infrastructure and Investment Fund (GIIF) Act also states that 25 per cent of the ABFA, should go into the GIIF for purposes of developing infrastructure. Mr. Forson, who

Independent security services, vital in fighting Corruption

Image
Mr Enoch Odame, Chairman of the Central Regional Inter-Party Dialogue Committee, has emphasised that an independent and neutral security service is vital in the fight to uproot corruption from the society. According to him, security agencies have a role to play in the fight against corruption and thus, their ability to remain neutral and ensure that clear institutional standards and laws were enforced without fear or favour must not be compromised. “Security services must be free to ensure that wrongdoers irrespective of their political affiliations face the appropriate legal penalties,” he stated. Mr Odame said this when he  addressed personnel of the various security agencies in the Central Region as part of the National Commission for Civic Education’s (NCCE) Anti-corruption Campaign and Constitutional Week Celebration in Cape Coast on Tuesday. He was speaking on the theme “The role of the security services in promoting transparency, public accountability and the rule of law in

Minority urges government to take hands off Common Fund

Stop the abuse of drugs – Sheikh Thani

Image
Sheikh Abdul-Razak Adamo Thani, an Islamic Scholar from Nigeria, has advised Ghanaian youth against the abuse of drugs such as Tramadol.  Sheikh Thani said Islam speaks against the use of drugs for illicit purposes, hence it was a sin for one to go contrary to what the Holy Quran says. “The Holy Quran says do not kill yourself by using hard drugs, in Islamic laws it is forbidden for any child or for any youth to be using drugs that are not permissible in Islam,” he said. Sheikh Adamo made the call at a Ramadan Public Lecture organised by Nasrul-Lahi-L-Fatih Society (NASFAT) in Accra during the weekend on the theme: “Islamic View Regarding Drug Abuse.” He noted that, drugs such as Tramadol was not a bad drug in itself but the way the youth have been over using it without prescriptions makes it a matter of concern. He said many lives were perishing as a result of the abuse of these drugs, which had now taken a trend in society. He therefore advised the youth to abide with government

Mr. Michael Adongo Ayibasa, President of the Bonded Nurses Association, told the Ghana News Agency that the picketing health professionals, had been told that what was left to be done for them to be employed was financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance. He said a number of their leaders were meeting with officials of the ministry to sort out their demands. Mr. Ayibasa also said one other reason they were picketing was to protest against being employed under the Heal Ghana Programme under National Builders Corp (NABCO). He said they had been promised by the government that 32,000 health workers would be employed by the end of March, 2018, out of which 27,000 would be nurses, but added that the promise had not been fulfilled, “and w

Government to construct irrigation systems to boost tomato production – Deputy Minister

The government has decided to construct small irrigation systems with solar-powered pumps for constant supply of water  to farming fields to make the production of fresh tomato an all-year round activity. Mr. George Oduro, a Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, said when he addressed a stakeholders meeting of the tomato farming industry at Tuobodom in the Techiman North District of Brong-Ahafo Region. It was organised by the District Assembly at the instance of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to identify solutions to challenges confronting tomato farmers in the area.   Other stakeholders in attendance were local tomato traders and some executive members of the Ghana National Tomato Traders and Transporters Association (GNTTTA).
