Ghana Tourism Authority closes down 31 hospitality facilities in Eastern Region

Image
The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has closed down 31 facilities in the Eastern Region including hotels, guest houses, hostels, restaurants, bars and motels, for not having operational licenses from the GTA, under a special enforcement exercise nationwide. The GTA is authorized and entrusted to register and license every tourism business and hospitality facility in Ghana, in accordance with the tourism Act 817 and spells out the function and role of the GTA as a regulatory body, which includes inspection and classification of all tourism and hospitality enterprises. A statement signed by the Eastern Regional Director of the GTA, Mr Frederick Adjei-Rudolph and copied to the GNA, said it took three days for the enforcement task force from the GTA to carry out the exercise. It said service delivery and safety of patrons to these tourism facilities couldn’t be taken for granted, hence, the exercise to clamp down on those facilities operating without license in accordance with the law Th

Towards ending open defecation ; World Vision to support schools construct toilet facilities

Image
World Vision International Ghana, a christian Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) says it would support schools in the country, to construct toilet facilities towards ending open defecation. Mr. Attah Arhin, the WASH Technical Coordinator of the NGO, said a significant number of public schools in the country lacked toilets and that tackling open defecation at the school level would imbibe the spirit of proper sanitation in pupils. “About 30 per cent of schools do not have toilet facilities, and we believe that when every school has a toilet, it would be a good start,” he told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) when he presented awards to two pupils of the Mawuli Basic School in Ho, who emerged winners of the maiden edition of the NGO’s Cartoon Campaign against Open Defecation. Mr. Arhin said open defecation was a “major killer” in Ghana, adding that it was being practiced daily by about seven million citizens. He also said the nation lost an estimated 3,600 children annually to diarrhoea,

Research findings may trigger new approach to oral health care

Image
Dentists in Ghana are adopting new approaches to handling oral health after a research led by Pepsodent, a subsidiary of the Unilver company, which produces toothpaste, showed that children with poor oral health are less likely to perform and participate in class. The research findings indicated that children with poor oral health do not just suffer bad breath, cavities and pain but also hidden damage as it is linked to lower self-esteem, affecting a child’s overall potential during education and beyond. Dr. Edward Ohene Marfo, a dentist at SDA Hospital in Gbawe, at the General Annual Conference of the Ghana Dental Association (GDA), called for the involvement of all stakeholders including parents, teachers, dentists and the media to continuously educate the larger population to practice good oral health, especially among children to help them to realise their full potential. He said dentists over the years, had focused on the pain of the child and the bad breathe caused by the cavi

Judgement debt to engage Parliament’s attention next week

Image
A number of financial issues, including that of the payment of judgement debts and failure by the Ministry of Finance to pay some releases would engage the attention of Parliament at next week’s sitting. The House has scheduled Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta to appear before it on Thursday, July 4, 2019, to tell the nation how much the Government paid in judgment debt from January 2017 to date. The Business Statement of the House, for next week-ending, July 4, 2019, which advertised the invitation, said on the same day, the Finance Minister would also answer the nation on why the Ministry of Finance failed to release to the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) its appropriated funds for August to November 2018 and January to May 2019 to enable the Fund to meet its obligations. Judgment debts involve decisions of courts directing payments to be made to a party in a court case, an Auditor General’s report released in 2010 named a businessman in Ghana for having been paid a judgment d

Study says staying up late affects men’s sperm quality

Image
Early bed-timers are almost four times more likely to have good-quality sperm to make their partners pregnant than late sleepers, a study has found. Scientists asked men what time they had typically gone to bed over the past month, and if a doctor had found them to have normal or low-quality sperm. Those who went to bed before 22:30 hours were almost four times more likely to have normal sperm than men who slept at 23:30 hours or later with the report stating that getting enough sleep was crucial. Evidence suggests sleep deprivation can cause the immune system to overreact and attack sperm, while going to bed too late may see couples run out of time to have sex, according to the study copied to the Ghana News Agency. Professor Hans Jakob Ingerslev, co-author of the study from Aarhus University, said: “These were men who had been trying to have a baby for about two years and an early bedtime was likely to be important because it allowed them to get more sleep.” “The reasons could b

The Committee of Selection in Ghana’s Parliament, has made certain changes to committee chairpersons of the House. According to a report by the Committee of Selection, the changes, which are part of a re-composition of the Select and Standing Committees of the House, became necessary, due to the need to enhance the performance and effectiveness of the committees of the House. NLA to roll out VAG lotto from July

Image
The National Lottery Authority (NLA) and the Veterans Administration of Ghana (VAG) are set to officially launch and operate the VAG lotto beginning this July. The operations of the VAG lotto will be very useful in addressing the issues of illegal lottery operations in the country. A statement copied to the media said the NLA-VAG partnership would give the NLA the sole power to operate, manage and regulate VAG lotto. Prior to the agreement with VAG, most private lotto operators and agents were operating under a license from VAG granted under Act 844, a law which empowers the veterans to engage in raffles and lottery to the benefit of its membership. However, the license issued by VAG to private lotto operators and agents came to an end in November 2018. The statement said VAG lacked the technology, infrastructure, machinery and resources to operate, manage and regulate VAG lotto and is depending on third parties who are abusing the lottery regulations. “It is important to state t

Tema residents want Ghana card registration process improved

Image
Residents of Tema have expressed concerns over the national card registration process, and are calling on the National Identification Authority (NIA) to improve the process of  acquiring a Ghana card in the ongoing mass registration exercise in the area. Some of the residents expressed worry at the slow pace of registration as they have to queue for days before they are even allowed to go through the process. The exercise, which started in the Accra – East area of which Tema is part, on June 4, 2019 and expected to end on July 6, 2019, seeks to register Ghanaians aged 15 years and above, after which a national identification card, that would later integrate all national identification documents, is given them. With barely a week to the end of the mass registration, a large number of residents are yet to register, as long queues were seen at some centres visited by the Ghana News Agency. The GNA observed that about 50 persons who had gone through the manual registration process, wer

Enforcing existing laws could help improve Air pollution – EPA

Image
Tightening pollution control and enforcing the already existing environmental laws could improve air quality and save thousands of lives every day. Mr. John A. Pwamang, Acting Executive Director of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), made this known in a speech read on his behalf at a forum organized by the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Centre for School and Community Science and Technology Studies (SACOST), to commemorate the United Nations World Environment celebration at Winneba. The celebration was on the theme “Air Pollution: Greening the Blue” was attended by a number of school children, who are the target groups to help disseminate the message , teachers, some lecturers from UEW, the Effutu Assembly and the Effutu Directorate of the Ghana Education Service. According to Mr. Pwamang, air pollution knows no boundary, and that, there was the need to collectively control emissions into the environment and called for immediate action to help fight it in Ghana now. Government commits to advancing the needs of minority groups – Bawumia

Image
Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on Thursday said the Akufo-Addo’s government has been promoting inclusive transformation development through the implementation of policies and programmes that recognised the needs and interests of the minority population. He noted that whenever a society neglected the needs of the minority groups, especially lack of jobs and basic social infrastructure, it often breds instability and conflicts. Therefore, government had instituted structures and measures to protect the rights of the minority groups and cited the establishment of the Zongo Development Fund, being managed by the Ministry of Inner City and Zongo Development, to bring infrastructural development in the Zongo communities. He mentioned the implementation of the Free Senior High School (FSHS) programme that enabled children from less privileged homes to access second cycle education, with 30 per cent of the students from deprived communities offered admissions into elite senior high scho

IMANI report reiterates need for transparency in management of petroleum resources

Image
IMANI Centre for Policy and Education’s report has emphasized the need for transparency in the management of the nation’s oil and gas resources. The report titled “Effects of Upstream Gas Contracting on Electricity and Inclusive Growth – The Case of Sankofa-Gye-Nyame (SGN) Gas Project,” a purely academic exercise, was conducted from 2018 to June, 2019. It said the SGN gas deal was procured under circumstances that were not sufficiently transparent. It would be recalled that government, the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) and Heliconia Ghana Limited entered into an agreement in respect of the Offshore Cape Three Points Petroleum Agreement (OCTP) governing the OCTP oil and gas project in March 2006. The current operator, ENI Ghana Exploration and Production, was brought into the OCTP petroleum agreement in September 2009. The report indicated that some of the resultant contract terms pose potential dire consequences in future and high gas prices might jeopardise the atta

Project for cardio funds launched

Image
The National Cardiothoracic Centre of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, with support from ITCONSORTIUM has launched  “Support Cardio Project” in Accra, to help tackle financial difficulties facing the centre. People willing to donate to the centre, can do so by dialing a short code, *700*9# on MTN, select “Donate,” enter “Cardio,” followed by the amount, select “frequency and duration,” then authorize payment. Dr. Lawrence Sereboe, the Director for the cardiothoracic centre, said there is hardly any insurance system that currently supports the centre. Dr. Sereboe noted that the National Health Insurance system, also did not apply when it came to heart surgery. “We know that one out of every 100 children born would have a hole in heart condition. Without surgical intervention, half of these children would not see their fifth birthday. Even if they do, the quality of life is poor and their life expectancy is reduced. It is not only the child that has problems when there is a hole in he

Reject travel offers to Arab world – Gender Minister

Image
The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has advised Ghanaians to be wary of fraudulent travel agents and ignore advertisements that promise opportunities for women and girls in the Arab world. According to the Ministry, many unsuspecting Ghanaian women had become slaves in Saudi Arabia, Libya and Greece, being trafficked for sex work, exploitation and various forms of forced labour. Mrs. Freda Prempeh, the Deputy Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection gave the advice when the Coalition of NGOs Against Child Trafficking paid a courtesy call on her. “Recruiters often target young women and girls with offers of good paying jobs in domestic service or the hospitality industry, but instead, traffick most of them for domestic and commercial sex work and slavery,” she said. She indicated that traveling was not a bad idea, but asked potential migrants to be cautions in order not to become victims of exploitation. She commended the government on its efforts and i

There is no green revolution without tax justice

Image
The “green wave” recorded during the European elections on 26 May should give Europe momentum. It is now time we oppose our determination to build a social, democratic and ecological Europe, against the withdrawal desires of nationalists and Eurosceptics, or the temptations of the status quo offered by Conservatives and Liberals. The strong mobilisation of young people for the climate gives me particular hope for the future. In France and Germany, the Greens were the highest-ranked party among the 18-34 demographic in this election. And though high school students cannot yet vote, they are already expressing their willingness to defend their future on the streets during the climate marches. As my mandate as a European MP ends after ten years of fighting, I want to tell these young mobilised people that it is up to them to take up the torch. I also want to convince them that for a greener Europe, we need more tax justice. First, because there is a direct link between environmental de

Rural revitalization holds the key to employment generation in Ghana

Image
Throughout much of Africa south of the Sahara, rural households earn their incomes primarily from agriculture and rapid rural population growth is putting pressure on governments to create jobs. In Ghana, agriculture employs over 40 per cent of the population, but average farm productivity remains low, a problem for rural livelihoods and incomes. Rural poverty increased between 2012-13 and 2016-17, particularly in Ghana’s northern regions, and poverty rates were highest for the self-employed in agriculture (see GLSS 7 results ).  Analysis by IFPRI researchers  suggests that non-farm employment growth has helped to mitigate rural poverty, though this consists mainly of low-wage, low-skill jobs in the informal service sector. Low agricultural productivity also has significant knock-on effects for value-added/agro-processing activities and for competing with imports domestically or exporting to regional or global markets. IFPRI’s  2019  Global Food Policy Report  (GFPR)  draws on cross-c

Stephen Yeboah 20, and Pasooba Issifu 18, both students, pleaded guilty and were together fined GHC 3,600.00 each. The two others, Kwabena Twumasi 29, and Issah Abubakar 25, both farmers, also pleaded guilty to the charges and were fined GHC 4,800.00 each. Prosecuting, Police Inspector Jonas Newlove Agyei told the Court, presided over by Mr. Michael Johnson Abbey that, the complainant was the Range Manager of the Desire Forest Reserve near Nimasua number two, in the Ahafo-Ano North Municipality. He said on June 6 this year, a joint military and police team, with forestry officials, went on patrols in the reserve and met the accused persons together with about 20 others, mining gold in the forest without authority. They were arrested together with two

Ford to cut 12,000 jobs in Europe, with 5,400 going in Germany

Image
US automotive giant Ford is to cut around 12,000 jobs in Europe, reducing its plants in the region by six to 18 by 2020, the company said from its European headquarters in Cologne on Thursday. Plants are to be shut down in Russia, France and Britain, and another in Slovakia is to be sold, Ford said, confirming an earlier announcement after it slipped deep into the red last year. Detailing job losses for the first time, the company said it had already reached retrenchment deals to shed more than 3,200 workers in Germany. Describing the move as “the hardest of decisions,” Ford Europe head Stuart Rowley said that discussions with workers’ representatives had proceeded smoothly with a view to alleviating the consequences. The company would focus on a long-term and sustainable future for its European business, Rowley said. While Cologne remains the main centre for car production, Britain will focus on utility vehicles. The company has been slow to make the switch to electric; its firs

Practical learning boosts confidence in science students – Study

Image
Practical hands-on training for students in the Junior High Schools (JHS) in areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) has shown to boosts the confidence of students and enables them to be innovative within and outside the classroom. This was contained in an 86-page study conducted to ascertain the impact of practical education on students and teachers in the Ghanaian JHS science classrooms. The findings were presented at a meeting organized by the Practical Education Network (PEN), an organisation, which promotes improved learning outcomes by building the capacity of teachers. The meeting, held in Accra, was on the theme: “Practical STEM Education in the Ghanaian Classrooms; Its Impact and the Way Forward”. The research studied 324 students in six JHS Science Classrooms in the Greater Accra Region, where the students were trained on hands-on learning with local materials such as soda, balloon, vinegar and paper. Intensive education for MDAs required to avoid demurrage – Asiedu-Dartey

Image
Mr. Fred Asiedu-Dartey, the Head of Freight and Logistics Department of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority is calling for massive education for Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), to avoid huge demurrage and rent cost at the various ports. “Shippers especially MDAs require adequate sensitization on exemption procedures, the administration of Un-cleared Cargo List (UCL) and how to avoid demurrage and rent costs and ultimately forfeiture of a consignment,” he said. Mr. Asiedu-Dartey made the call in Accra, at a sensitization seminar on UCL held for government MDAs to highlight issues in the maritime sector and find ways of addressing them. He said the Authority has identified the lack of official notification to shipping lines when consignments on the UCL were about to be auctioned and also, shipping agencies were not furnished with information of the buyer, to enable them track and retrieve the container. “We have also identified lapses of selective gazetting of overstayed cargo
