A research conducted by Health and Safety Ghana (HESAG) has revealed that only 10.2 per cent of stone quarry workers in the country wore the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). The survey showed that there is a high incidence of non-compliance to the wearing of Personal Protective Equipment by quarry workers, with workers often suffering from health challenges including headache, eye irritation, common cold, difficulty in breathing, coughing, among others which could lead to silicosis. The research was undertaken in 40 stone quarry sites in five regions in Ghana, including the Greater Accra, Central, Eastern, Ashanti and Western Regions, with 530 workers being interviewed. The objectives of the research were to ascertain the level of quarry workers’ adherence to the use of Personal Protective Equipment in their workplace and the extent of health and safety awareness campaign amongst quarry workers, as well as identify silica dust related ailments in the quarry industry.

The 2020 Population and Housing Census to be done by the Ghana Statistical Services, will for the first time capture data on disability. The Statistical Service will be using the Washington Group of Questions, a set of questions on disability designed for census use in the survey of general population. Some disabled persons’ organizations have lauded the move, but have called on the Statistical Service to streamline the questions to suit the Ghana situation to be able to capture data on specific disabilities such as Autism and Cerebral Palsy. Mr Kwamena Dadzie-Denis, Chairman of the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD), told the Ghana News Agency that the disabled persons’ organizations will meet to come up with suggested questions that will help capture specific data on specific disabilities especially on children with disabilities. The Debt Management and Compliance Enforcement Unit of  the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has closed down the Head Office of the Surfline Communication Limited at Roman Ridge for un-paid taxes to the tune of GH¢37.3 million. Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into Africa rose in 2017, with South Africa and Morocco as leading investment destinations, according to a report emailed to Xinhua on Monday. Last year Africa attracted 718 FDI projects, which was up 6 percent from the previous year, in line with a recovery in the continent’s economic growth, said the Africa Attractiveness report, compiled by Ernst & Young (EY), a multinational professional services firm. The higher project numbers were driven by interest in “next generation” sectors, namely manufacturing, infrastructure and power generation, said the report. The report also highlighted the countries with the strongest FDI gains, with Ethiopia, Kenya and Zimbabwe experiencing a major uptick in FDI during 2017. South Africa shares the title of the largest African FDI hub with Morocco, while southern, west, east and north Africa all receive more or less equal FDI, measured in project numbers. Rising energy prices pushed inflation in Germany in October to its highest level for 10 years. Prices rose by 2.5 per cent compared to the same month in 2017, the Federal Office of Statistics in the city of Wiesbaden announced on Tuesday based on preliminary data. African countries at the recent meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank in Bali made a strong case for the use of coal to power their development, according to Bank President Jim Yong Kim. During the meetings on the Indonesian island, Mr Kim said that he was approached by officials from developing countries, mainly from Africa, who talked about the Bank’s reluctance to fund coal-powered plants that would provide more electricity for countries that are facing huge power shortages that are stunting their development Mr. Kim said he was told that he was asking African countries, “which have put almost none of the carbon in the air” not to have baseload electricity. Lawyers from the State’s Attorney General’s Office on Tuesday applied for an in-camera hearing for the third Prosecution Witness in the case of the National Communication Authority (NCA) with the reason that his evidence would bother on National Security. Led by Madam Yvonne Attakora Buobisa, the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) of the Attorney General Department, she quoted Article 19 (15) to make the application, saying, if a matter involved state’s security, public morality, public safety and public order it would be prejudiced when publicised. The witness is a National Security representative and would disclose matters of national interest, which would bother on the security of the State and public safety, she stressed. She explained that the Article, which gives room for such matters to be in camera also, gave liberty, privileges, and afforded the accused persons fairness in criminal proceedings.
