Private sector accepts Africa free trade area agreement

The Intra-African Connect, an organization committed to promoting and enabling Intra-African Trade and investment on Good Friday lauded the signing of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement.  The agreement commits countries to removing tariffs on 90 per cent of goods, and to liberalise services as well as create a trade bloc of 1.2 billion people with a combined Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of more than $2 trillion.  A statement issued by Intra-African Connect, and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra said the private sector players from across the continent had engaged Heads of States, the African Union and policy makers on matters that formed the basis for the African Continental Free Trade Agreement reality. The statement said a simple analysis of the ratios of Gross National Income (GNI) against Gross Domestic Product (GDP) show that African countries are not trading with themselves, hence not generating adequate domestic income.  According to the Intra-African Connec

Gender Minister calls for intensive efforts against inequality

Image
Madam Otiko Afisa Djaba, Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, has called for intensive effort to address the inequality gap in the country. She said research had shown that inequality was a challenge to Ghana’s development efforts and must therefore engage the attention of all partners. She noted that a study by UNICEF, University of Sussex and Ashesi University in 2016 based on the Ghana Living Standards survey round six indicated that, though Ghana had experienced steady increasing growth of over seven per cent per year on the average since 2005, inequality had been increasing in the country and poverty remained prevalent in many areas. She said the research confirmed that considerable gains had been achieved in reducing poverty over the past two decades but the rising inequality was increasingly threatening progress made and efforts in ensuring inclusive growth for Ghana. Madam Djaba made these remarks in a speech read on her behalf on Thursday at a one-day public

Inequality threatening Ghana’s poverty reduction gains – Oxfam

Image
Oxfam International, a civil society organisation, has warned that Ghana’s poverty reduction gains over the past two decades is being threatened by inequality gap. Mr Tijani Ahmed Hamza, Country Manager of Oxfam in Ghana, said Ghana had made progress just like most parts of the world in the struggles against poverty, especially in the last two decades in Ghana, with the number of people living in poverty reducing considerably. He said unfortunately, this progress in Ghana just like most parts of the world, was being threatened by rising inequality. This is because money, power and opportunities are increasingly getting concentrated in the hands of the few at the expense of the majority, he said. He explained that the implication for this was that a person born by a rich parent was most likely go to the best school and would receive the highest quality of health care if they were sick, while poor families would see their children stuck by easily preventable diseases because they do
