German unemployment rate rises to 5.3% for January

Image
Germany’s unemployment rate rose by 0.4 percentage points to 5.3 per cent for January, the labour agency reported on Thursday, as the country added 196,000 job seekers to its rolls compared to December 2018. Experts at the agency said an increase for January is standard, as cold weather depresses demand for people in sectors like construction. The seasonally adjusted number of unemployed hit 2.4 million, said the agency, but added this was the lowest such number for a January since German reunification in 1990. Detlef Scheele, head of the labour agency, said the numbers do not tell the whole story and said the job market remained strong. “Business’ demand for new workers remains at a very high level,” he said. December’s rate, reported earlier this month, marked a 0.1 percentage point increase to 4.9 per cent, a figure which helped German unemployment for 2018 fall to its lowest level since reunification. Compared to January 2018, there were 165,000 fewer people out of work for thi

GEPA to formulate new National Export Development Strategy

The Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA) has begun the process to formulate a new National Export Development Strategy to enhance Ghana’s effective participation in the multilateral trading system. It is also to enable the country to take maximum advantage of market opportunities in the short, medium and long terms. Addressing participants at the opening session of a national workshop to formulate the strategy, Ms Afua Asabea Asare, the Chief Executive Officer of GEPA, said the design of new export strategy followed the expiry of the existing National Export Strategy (NES), which was formulated and launched in 2012 for implementation within a five-year period. She said there was, therefore, the need to formulate a new strategy within the context of Government’s industrial transformation agenda based on the 1D1F and other laudable initiatives. A family source told the Ghana News Agency that the deceased has been married to her husband, named withheld, for over 18 years, yielding four kids between them. Germany stops 14,000 illegal immigrants crossing border

Image
Germany caught 14,000 migrants trying to enter the country illegally on buses or trains from January to November 2018, according to a report by the local Rheinische Post on Monday. The newspaper said an internal federal police document showed that most of the migrants entered the country from neighboring Austria. The next highest number of illegal crossings was on the border with France and Switzerland. Almost 8,000 migrants entered Germany on buses and over 6,000 on trains. Most of the migrants were from Afghanistan, Nigeria, Iraq, Syria and Turkey, the report said. Passport checks on buses will become more difficult after the European Court of Justice ruled that bus companies be prohibited from checking passengers’ passports because Germany is a member of the Schengen area. A German and a Spanish bus company had brought action against a German regulation requiring them to check passengers’ passports and residence permits before crossing the border. However, the ruling needs to b
