The literacy proficiency of almost 80 per cent of Ghana’s working-age population is limited to understanding basic text – making this fraction of Ghana’s educated working adults effectively low-skilled, according to the World Development Report 2018. The report by the World Banks says workers who fall within this bracket are classified as having just Level 1 literacy or below. This practically means their literacy proficiency is limited to understanding basic texts, but they are not able to integrate, evaluate, or interpret information from a variety of text materials. Whereas Ghana has nearly 80  per cent of her educated working adults low-skilled, Kenya has about 60 per cent of her educated workforce effectively low-skilled. “The mapping between schooling and workforce skills varies dramatically across countries. For example, the working-age population in Colombia reaches basic literacy proficiency by the lower secondary level, whereas the population of Bolivia needs six more year

NDC clears 1,019 delegates for Northern Region elections

The Northern Regional Secretariat of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has cleared a total of 1019 delegates from all the 31 constituencies in the region to vote in its Saturday’s regional executives’ elections to elect officers to steer its affairs for the next four years. The elections for the regional women’s organizer and youth organizer positions will be held today, Friday in Tamale whiles elections for the rest of the positions will be held at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium on Saturday. There are 71 candidates vying for the 15 regional executive positions, which include chairman, secretary, organizer, youth organizer, women’s organizer, treasurer, communications officer, and their deputies, and a zongo caucus coordinator. There are six candidates including Mr Moses Bukari Mabengba, a former Regional Minister, and Mr Godfred Apasinaba Wumbei, incumbent Regional Organizer, who are vying for the regional chairmanship position. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo left Accra on Thursday night as head of Ghana’s delegation to the People’s Republic of China on a state visit. The visit, which is at the invitation of the Chinese leader, Xi Jinping, is to deepen the strong ties between the two countries, as well as explore other areas of co-operation for their mutual benefit. President Akufo-Addo would also attend the 3rd Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Co-operation (FOCAC) and address an investment forum of Ghanaian and Chinese business leaders, to be held in Shangdong Province of China. Only 1.5 billion MTN Ghana shares bought in IPO

MTN Ghana has offered 1,530,474,360 shares to Ghanaians and a number of foreigners in its ‘Initial Public Offer’ (IPO) which started on May 29, this year and ended on July 31, even though the company targeted 4.5 billion shares. The Offer, which was initiated to give the general public especially Ghanaians the privilege to own shares of the Network, constituted up to GH¢4,637,394,533 of ordinary MTN shares valued at GH¢3,478,045,900 at an offer price of GH¢0.75 per share representing up to 35 per cent of the issued shares of MTN Ghana after the offer to qualify applicants. The results of the IPO were announced at a Media and Stakeholder forum in Accra on Thursday. Delivering the results on the offer, Mr Selorm Adadevoh, Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana said 1,367,386,080 were obtained by institutional applicants while 163,088,280 were obtained by retailers. A research conducted in the West Mamprusi District of the Northern Region has revealed that one of the major factors contributing to household food insecurity in the area is the prevention of smallholder women farmers to farm on productive lands. The research findings which was made known at a sensitization forum organized at the Tikarinongu community in the District attracted various stakeholders including traditional authorities, opinion leaders, women and youth groups, local authorities among others. The research conducted by the Tikarinongu Cooperative Farmers and Marketing Union at the Tikarinongu with funding support from the Business Sector Advocacy Challenge (BUSAC) Fund was aimed at addressing the challenges confronting smallholder rural women farmers in the White Volta basin in the West Mamprusi District. Emirates Airlines on Thursday said while it is not immediately introducing a larger aircraft onto its Accra-Dubai route, it is open to explore options for expansion as the route continues to grow, either with additional flights or with larger aircraft. The airline had announced that it will operate a one-off flight of the iconic Airbus A380 on October 2nd, 2018 in commemoration of the opening of the Terminal three (T3) at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra. Germany signs MoU with Ghana to build automotive assembly plant in Ghana

The Ministry of Trade and Industry has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a German automobile company, Volswagen, to build an automotive assembly plant in Ghana. The MoU, which was signed between Volswagen and the Ministry at the Business Dialogue in Accra on Thursday, was facilitated by the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce. The signing ceremony was witnessed by the visiting German Chancellor, Dr Angela Merkel and Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. An Accra High Court will on September 7, rule on an application, whether or not to stay proceedings against Dr Dominic Obeng-Andoh, Chief Executive Officer of Obengfo Hospital in Weija at an Accra Circuit Court. The court presided over by Mr Justice Abdullah Iddirsu, fixed the date for ruling after counsel for Dr Obeng-Andoh aka Obengfo had moved a motion on notice to stay proceedings at the Circuit Court against his client, on Thursday. The State led by Mr Ashong Okine, a Senior Attorney with the Attorney General’s Department opposed the motion in his response. Twifo Attimokwa Assembly moves to stop zero percent performance in BECE

The Twifo Attimokwa District Assembly in the Central Region has instituted measures to end the persistent zero percent scores in the Basic Education Certificate Education (BECE) by some schools in the District. The Assembly believes that the problem should be addressed in order not to deny children the opportunity to access the Free Senior High School initiative to develop themselves. The assault case involving Lance Corporal Godzi Frederick Amanor, popularly known as “Skalla,” who allegedly assaulted a woman at the Shiashie branch of the Midland Savings and Loans Company has been adjourned to September 26 to enable one of the lawyers study the case. The counsel requested the Court that he needed copies of the charge sheet and facts of the case to study to enable him to defend his client. Meanwhile, the case has been transferred from the Circuit Court Five to Court Four presided over by Mr Emmanuel Essandoh. When the case was called, all the four accused persons; Lance Corporal Amanor, Joycelyn Kukua, the Operations Manager, Shirley Portia Anaman, Customer Care Officer and Prince Ayensu, a driver of the company were present. However, the complainant did not turn-up. Lance Corporal Amanor as well as his accomplices have been charged for assault and abetment of the alleged crime respectively. The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) says some unscrupulous persons were using its name to defraud prospective car buyers. Mrs Esther Gyebi-Donkor, General Manager, Marketing and Corporate Affairs of GPHA, stated that such persons create  fake websites in the name of the company which they use to swindle people. Mrs Gyebi-Donkor said “these people will snapshot our website and manage to add that kind of information creating a fake website in GPHA’s name”. She further explained that they then linked on-line marketing portals to the fake website and indicate that “if you need a car you should go to that  website”. She therefore cautioned the public against dealing with such persons, stressing that “if anybody tells you that GPHA is selling cars, don’t waste your time to make any further enquiries. Nigeria accuses MTN of remitting $8.1b to parent company in South Africa – Reports

MTN Nigeria has ran into trouble yet again with the Nigerian authorities, this time in what is being described as an illegal repatriation of funds to its parent company, MTN Group of South Africa. Reports in Nigerian newspapers this morning say the central bank has ordered MTN to refund an amount of $8.134 billion that it illegally remitted to MTN Group based in Johannesburg, over a period of nine years. The reports, which Nigerian journalist, Adeola Yusuf confirmed to ghanabusinessnews.com, are on the front page of all major newspapers in the country say the Bank had written to MTN Nigeria on Tuesday August 29, 2018, after carrying out investigations over the period indicated to refund the $8.134 billion with immediate effect. Three years ago, the Nigerian Communications Commission fined MTN Nigeria an amount of $916 million for not complying with a directive to deactivate unregistered SIM cards in the country. In April this year, MTN paid half of the fine – the company paid $458 m

Officials of the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS) have held a day’s engagement with finance directors of major companies to explain the workings and benefits of GhIPSS Instant Pay (GIP). The move is part of efforts to increase public awareness about the GIP. The GIP is a real time interbank payment platform that enables money to be transferred immediately from one bank account to another. It serves as a payment platform for companies and individuals who need to make instant payments without the need to move physically to the recipient. Currently over 80 per cent of banks mainly the major ones have integrated their system with the GIP platform. The instant pay service is offered through different channels. Most of the banks offer GIP through their internet banking platform, mobile Apps, as well as automated teller machines (ATMs). The GIP can also be offered through Point of Sales devices. Court sentences Nigerian for snatching money bags

A 25-year-old Nigerian Chijioke Amadi was on Wednesday sentenced to a fine of GH¢2,400.00 by an Accra Circuit Court for snatching the bags of money changers containing different currencies to the tune of GH¢53,610.00. Amadi, unemployed, will in default, serve two years imprisonment in hard labour. He denied the offence but was found culpable. His accomplice, one Ndubueze Odoemenam, also unemployed, together with Amadi jumped bail when they were granted bail of GH¢55,000.00 with three sureties each but Amadi was re-arrested whilst Odoemenam, is still on the run. They were charged with conspiracy to commit crime and stealing. Police Chief Inspector Rosina Tetteh told the Court presided over by Madam Marian Affoh that the prosecuting witnesses are Abdul Rahman and Abubakari Nuhu trades in Foreign Exchange at Tudu in Accra.
