AfCFTA, is a flagship project carved out of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) scheduled for 2022 and mainly included in Agenda 2063 of the African Union. Muslims advised on how to break their fast

Image
Muslims have been advised to be cautious and particular with their food intake, during this year’s Ramadan. “It is very important to go through the fasting period, with a good understanding of how to break the fast, with regards to what food to eat, as well as the ones to be avoided.” Mr Issah Sumaila, a registered dietician, said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, at a health walk which was organised by the Ghana Academy of Muslim Professionals in Accra. He said while fasting was a needed religious practice, it could also be therapeutic and useful in controlling and even curing certain health conditions such as diabetes. The dietician advised against foods that were high in fat, sugar and cholesterol and when breaking the fast, “go easy on complex carbohydrates. You could take them in moderate amounts, but not too much.” Mr Sumaila said foods such as rice and banku could be taken in moderate quantities as well as animal protein and quickly added, “but these proteins

Speak up: We all can be mental illness patients

Image
“Overall, the evidence suggests that liking continues to increase as people are exposed to an idea between ten and twenty times, with additional exposure still useful for more complex ideas.” Adam Grant argues in Originals. I have considerable reason to argue that the aforementioned quote holds true in Ghana, with regards to mental health. Acceptance and conformity seem to increase the more we get exposed to norms and ideas. For as long as I have lived, conversations around this area of health has been a taboo subject and are frowned upon by even the supposedly enlightened. In recent times, however, efforts have been made by some to bring the conversation around this subject into the mainstream. I must admit that even as a student, those who lectured in this area were called names and claimed to suffer from one mental health condition or the other. In most cases, derogatory comments were made. The result is that many health professionals much early in their training opted out of sp

The House was informed at its adjournment on Friday, April 12, 2019 of a possible recall from recess to consider among other issues, the Vigilantism and Related Offences Bill, 2019. However, Majority Leader and MP for Suame Constituency Osei-Kyei-Mensah Bonsu, told the House, at the opening of the emergency meeting, in Accra, that “indications from the Committee on Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs reveals that further consultation is required.” He said that included the Professor Emmanuel Asante Committee Report on its meeting with political parties, and “in the circumstances, the consideration of the Bill at this Emergency Meeting may not be done.” Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu added that the House would however concentrate on the Compani

Media freedom is pivotal to fighting corruption in Africa – Jeremy Hunt

Image
Mr Jeremy Hunt, the United Kingdom Secretary for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, said one factor that could aid African nations to crackdown on corruption was by strengthening and sustaining media freedom. This he said, would enable the media to play complementary roles in the development process. He lauded Ghana for being the beacon of democracy in Africa and coming ahead of the United Kingdom in the global media index, noting that one factor that made Ghana to stand out was her determination to build social capital to enable the society to function effectively. He commended investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, for his tremendous role in fighting corruption. Mr Hunt made the remarks at a reception to mark the 70th Anniversary of the Commonwealth, organized by the British High Commission, at the British Council in Accra on Monday. The Anniversary is on the theme: ‘‘A Connected Commonwealth,” which brought together captains of industry, a Business Delegation from the Uni

Mass registration for NIA cards takes off smoothly

Many residents of the Greater Accra Region, on Monday, turned up at the various registration centres of the National Identification Authority (NIA) to have their names recorded in the National Identity Register to be issued with the Ghana Card. The Monday to Saturday exercise, which would end on Saturday, July 6, would capture eligible Ghanaians from the age of 15. When the Ghana News Agency visited the Ga South Municipal Centre at 0900 hours, the applicants had formed a long queue, patiently awaiting their turns. The elderly ones, however, occupied the chairs provided by the officials. Some of the applicants, however, complained about the occasional breaks in the internet reception of the biometric machines as that slowed down the process. This sometimes resulted in the registration process lasting about 20 minutes for an applicant. Some of them, therefore, appealed to the NIA to increase the centres. Others said they did not know how to acquire their digital address code and wa

Ghana’s first private hospital open-heart surgery patient doing great

Image
Less than twelve hours after undergoing an open-heart surgery at the Providence Specialist Hospital in Accra, 61-year-old Anthony Ofori, is making remarkable progress, according to his Intensive Care Unit specialist. The surgery, the first to be performed outside the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, replaced a damaged mitral valve with an artificial one to facilitate blood flow from his left atrium to the left ventricle. Dr Ernest Ofosu Appiah, a Consultant Anaesthetist, and Head of the Intensive Care Unit, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Accra on Sunday, that the patient was in a stable condition, active and had begun feeding on fluid foods. “We have observed that he is fast improving -he is no more on the ventilator, a machine that helps  patients to breathe,” he said. This was very impressive because others were usually weaned off the ventilator after about  a week, he remarked. With an infectious smile, Mr Ofori is said to have thanked God and the medical team for a successful

There is an Africa Poverty Clock – Let that sink in

Image
While around the world extreme poverty has declined considerably, new World Bank estimates suggest that the number of extremely poor people—those who live on $1.90 a day or less—has fallen from 1.9 billion in 1990 to about 736 million in 2015. But the number of people living in extreme poverty is on the rise in sub-Saharan Africa, and they make up more than half of the extreme poor in 2015. Projections also point to the fact that by 2030, nearly nine in 10 extremely poor people will live in sub-Saharan Africa. The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) has launched the Africa Poverty Clock, so the efforts of African countries to reduce poverty will be monitored. “As of today, the clock shows that more than 400 million people in Africa, equivalent to about 33 per cent of the population of the continent live in extreme poverty. The clock shows that, on this day, 25 March 2019, over 5,000 people have escaped poverty, but a similar number has also fallen into poverty,” Vera Songwe, the Exe

Emergency management agencies urged to provide psychological interventions

Image
The Ghana Psychology Council (GPC) has underscored the need for emergency management agencies to provide emotional and psychological interventions to victims of an event. Dr Dinah Baah-Odoom, the Registrar of GPC noted that as a country, there was much focus on the physical resources in terms of emergencies, however, psychologically, there was also the need to be prepared. She said once these agencies identify there was a trauma, even physical, as floods or road accidents, they should know that the person psychologically was not the same and must be referred to see a Psychologist. Dr Baah-Odoom said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), on the side-lines of a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Workshop in Accra. It was organised by GPC in collaboration with PsyK Forum, on the topic: “Psychological- Mental Health in Emergencies”. Dr Baah-Odoom recounted that among their objectives was to equip counselors with basic skills to help them address issues relating
