In the country’s fight against corruption, Nigeria has convicted some 188 people since January 2018. The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu told the VOA in an interview monitored in Accra Sunday September 30, 2018. He however, indicated that all Nigerians should be involved in the fight against corruption because a single organization like the EFCC can’t do it all by itself. He said the EFCC is working at stamping out corruption in the country in about three years. There is no available estimate of how much Nigeria losses to corruption annually, but being the largest economy in West Africa, the figures could be staggering. The UK Department for International Development (DFID) however estimated that the country lost $32 billion to corruption during the six years of Goodluck Jonathan’s administration. The West Akyem Municipal Assembly has passed a bye-law banning the use of lorry tyres in the processing of meat for sale by butchers and slaughter houses in the Municipality. Any butcher who breaches the bye-law will be liable on conviction to a fine of between 50 and 100 penalty units (GHc600-GHc1200) or in default imprisonment to a term not exceeding six months or both. The Assembly passed another bye-law to prohibit the use of passenger vehicles, including taxi cabs, for transporting dead bodies to and from hospital mortuaries. The bye-law permits only ambulances and hearses for transporting dead bodies and drivers who breach that provision are liable on conviction to a fine of between 20 to 30 penalty units, which is equivalent to between Ghc240.00 to Ghc360.00. The Upper West Regional Minister, Alhaji Alhansan Sulemana, on Friday inspected a 40-acre prison inmates’ farm at Baayiri in the Wa East District. The visit was under the auspices of the Food and Agriculture Minister, Dr Owusu Afriyie, and sought to find out how the farm was faring under the Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ). Alhaji Suleman said he was impressed with the project and pledged government’s support to the Prison Service, saying the project would be extended next season to cover senior high schools, the Police Service and other state institutions. He assured of government’s support towards institutions that would like to venture into projects like PFJ and One District One Ware House to facilitate farming activities. The Ghana Health Service (GHS) in Upper West and a Coalition of youth groups in Nadowli-Kaleo District are in standoff over the transfer of a gynaecologist from the Nadowli District Hospital. The youth coalition is protesting the transfer of gynaecologist Ibrahim Muslim, and demanding the decision is reversed. The regional health directorate, however, says the transfer is justified and that this is to ensure equitable distribution of doctors in the region. Mr Ankaara John Bosco Spokesperson of the youth, said in a statement to the Ghana News Agency in Wa, said “while we acknowledge that transfers are normal administrative procedures for every organization, we think that dealing with a specialist requires a more careful approach”. The Bongo District Assembly, is showing strong revenue collection performance, raking in GH¢153,294.92, as of the end of the first half of the year. The figure represented 65.97 per cent of the GH¢232.378.00 it had targeted to collect in 2018. Mr Peter Ayinbisa Ayamga, the District Chief Executive (DCE), announced this at an ordinary meeting of the assembly held in Bongo. He said compared with the last year’s same period figure, the performance was encouraging. At the end of the second quarter of 2017, the assembly had collected GH¢113,024.84, which was 49.12 per cent of what it had projected to collect for that year. He said despite the resource constraints, the Office of the Special Prosecutor, could deliver on its mandate, if given the necessary support by civil society. Speaking at the SNV Netherlands Development Organization’s Voice for Change Partnership (V4CP) Programme Learning Event, in Accra, the Ambassador said, “CSOs are the voice of citizens at local, national and international level,” and could help make the government more accountable to citizens, to increase its legitimacy. The Upper West Regional Director of Agriculture is projecting a bumper harvest this year after 94,000 farmers registered for the Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) programme, an initiative by government to boost food production. Mr Sasu Yeboah said there was going to be increased food production in the area. This was when he together with Regional Minister, Alhaji Sulemana Alhanssan, visited a 25-acre maize farm at Moyiri in the Dafiama-Busie-Issa (DBI) District to monitor the PFJ programme. He said the PFJs crops were doing far better this year than the previous years and so “the region is expecting a bumper harvest”. About 230,000 acres of farms had been captured under the PFJ policy and he called on farmers, who were yet to register with the programme to do so to raise food production. A farm labourer, Mahama Zackaria, who stole 72 bunches of palm fruits, has been sentenced to a fine of GH¢960.00 by a Kade District Court. In default, Zacharia, who pleaded not guilty, will serve eight months in prison in hard labour. Prosecuting, Detective Chief Inspector Isaac Owusu Achiaw told the Court, presided over by Ms Felicia Anane Antwi, that the complainant, Yaw Darko and the accused lived at Kwae, where Darko harvested 72 bunches of palm fruits on May 23 and kept them on his oil palm plantation. Darko later contracted one Kwaku Aboagye, a driver, to convey the palm fruits to his house, but due to the bad nature of the road, the driver’s vehicle got stuck, hence could not get to the farm to convey the fruits. On May 30, the accused, who knew that the harvested palm fruits were in the farm, hired a tricycle there and collected all the fruits, which he sold to one Adwoa Serwaa, a witness in the case, for GH¢600.00. A Zambian trade delegation is in Ghana to learn about the gari processing sector and the entire cassava value-chain production to replicate it in their country. Parliament has approved the amended Financing Agreement between Ghana and the International Development Association (IDA) for an amount equivalent to $50 million to finance the Ghana Commercial Agriculture Project (GCAP). The facility provides Ghana with special drawing rights to access the funds to improve agricultural productivity and production of both smallholder and nucleus farms in the country. Dr Mark Assibey Yeboah, Chairman of the Finance Committee, in presenting the Committee’s report explained that, the original financing for the Ghana Commercial Agriculture Project (GCAP) was approved by Parliament on August 16, 2012 and subsequently became effective on April 8, 2013. He said the objective of the project was to increase access to land, private sector finance, input and out markets by smallholder farmers from Public-Private-Partnerships (PPPs) in Commercial Agriculture in the Accra Plains and the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) zone. The Forestry Commission and the Military are undertaking a joint operation in the Western Region to clamp down on illegal forest activities. Dubbed ‘Halt 3’, the operation being conducted in the Sefwi Wiawso area in the Western Region, started on September 13, 2018, and will end on October 4, 2018. Briefing the media on the operation, Mr John Allotey Deputy Chief Executive of the Forestry Commission, said the forest and wildlife resources in the Region were under serious threat through human activities, especially illegal farming, mining, logging, chain sawing and commercial collection of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) as well as poaching. He said these activities in the forest reserves in the Region were causing serious havoc to the environment and forest resources. He said during a rapid field assessment of the extent of degradation, it was discovered that 24,398.96 hectares of intact forest had been lost to forest illegalities. The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has achieved a 99 per cent paperless operational system, one year after its introduction into the country’s ports clearance process. The paperless port system, which was a government policy announced by Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in May 2017, took off from September 1, 2017. Mrs Esther Gyebi-Donkor, General Manager, Marketing and Corporate Affairs of GPHA, disclosing this, said the feat included the integration of GPHA’s IT systems with Ghana Community Network (GCNet) Mrs Gyebi-Donkor added that the information from shipping lines, manifest, and GPHA’s billing system had all been made electronic as part of the paperless system.
