PWDs in Ho benefit from Disability Common Fund
The Ho Municipal Assembly has given cash and logistical supports to 91 Persons with Disability (PWDs) under the Disability Common Fund.
A total of 56 PWDs received tricycles, canopies and sewing machines among others for income generation activities, whiles 17 received support towards education and training.
The rest received funds for health and assistive devices including spectacles, clutches, and prosthetic limbs.
Mr Alex Akpo, Ho Municipal President of the Ghana Federation of the Disabled expressed gratitude to Government for the support and urged beneficiaries to make good use of the support.
He discouraged PWDs from begging for alms on streets and asked them to exhibit their productiveness by developing economic ventures.
Mr Nelson Akorli, Ho Municipal Chief Executive said Government had schemes in place to provide jobs for PWDs and that 30 per cent of Government procurements had been reserved for companies owned by the disabled.
He said the Disability Common Fund had been increased from two to three per cent whiles the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty initiative had also been expanded to benefit 30 new communities in the Municipality.
Mr Akorli said the Disability Act (715) was being reviewed to be at par with the United Nation’s standards for PWDs, and added that the Ghana Standards Authority was ensuring that all buildings in the country had access ramps for the disabled.
