Supreme Court okays provision of documents to accused persons in $4m NCA case

The Supreme Court has asked the State to provide five persons standing trial in the $4 million National Communication Authority (NCA) scandal with documents they intend to rely on during the trial. The five persons standing trial are: Eugene Baffoe- Bonnie, former Board Chairman of the Authority, William Tevie former Director-General (NCA), Nana Yaw Ensaw former sub-committee Chairman on Finance at the NCA, Alhaji Salifu Osman, former Deputy National Security coordinator and George Oppong, a businessman. The NCA trial at the High Court was put on hold following a writ filed at the Supreme Court by the five accused persons seeking an interpretation of Article 19 (e) and (g) which relates to the provision of adequate facilities to ensure fair trial. Africa to hit 634 million mobile subscribers by 2025 – Report

The new report forecasts that there will be 634 million unique mobile subscribers across Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) by 2025, according to the latest edition of GSMA Mobile Economy report series. It said that figure was equivalent to 52 per cent of the population, up from 444 million (44 per cent) at the end of last year, monitored by the Ghana News Agency.   The report also calculated that the mobile ecosystem will add more than $150billion in value to SSA’s economy by 2022, equivalent to almost eight per cent of regional GDP.   Mr John Giusti, Chief Regulatory Officer at the GSMA said “For many citizens across the region, particularly those living in rural areas, a mobile phone is not just a communications device but also the primary channel for getting online and a vital tool for improving their lives.   “More needs to be done to extend connectivity to the remaining unconnected and underserved populations across Sub-Sahara Africa, but this will require a focus...

Government announces 10 reforms to make business in Ghana conducive

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on Monday announced 10 measures introduced by government agencies, over the past nine months, to improve the country’s ease of doing business. Vice President Bawumia announced the measures in Accra at a Stakeholders’ Update on Reforms by the Government to Ease Doing Business in Ghana. The workshop was to engage and create awareness within the private sector, which is ultimately the beneficiary of the ambitious reforms introduced by the Government. The planned reforms are within the framework of the World Bank Group’s Doing Business Report, which provides objective measures of business regulations for local firms in 190 economies and selected cities at the subnational level. They would cover starting a business, obtaining construction permits, getting electricity, trading across borders, and resolving insolvency.
