Newmont Golden Ridge Limited (Newmont Akyem Mine) and its mine host communities have reviewed three agreements upon which social investments in the communities had been undertaken. Newmont and its surrounding communities, in 2014, formed the Akyem Social Responsibility Forum (SRF) to regularly dialogue on how host communities can benefit from the presence of the mine and to enhance the impact of its resource allocation to the communities. The forum, made up of representatives from all the communities, government agencies and Newmont, came up with three main agreements, known as the Forum Agreements. Ghana is not yet ready for the legalisation and decriminalisation of Marijuana, Mr. Shadrach Bosomtwe, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Commander of the Narcotics Control Board (NACOB) declared on Tuesday in Sunyani. He said by Ghana’s law it was illegal to possess, use, trade or cultivate Marijuana, popular called ‘Wee’ by the public in most communities in the country. Mr. Bosomtwe was speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency as part of the regional commemoration of the 2018 World Drug Day celebration on the theme “Listen First- Listening to Children and Youth is the First Step to Help Them Grow Healthy and Safe”. An Accra High Court on Wednesday turned down a bail application filed by Dr Dominic Kwame Obeng-Andoh, Chief Executive Officer of Obengfo Hospital who is being held for the murder of Stacy Offie Darko. Ms Darko until her death was the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship Innovation Programme at the Presidency. The Court presided over by Mr Justice Kofi Dorgu held that it was premature to grant bail. According to the Court some cases took time for investigation to be completed, adding that the autopsy report of the late Ms Offie Darko was not ready. The Court however advised Dr Obengfo to repeat the bail application at a later date. However, Edward Amponsah, a cleaner at the Hospital who is being held on charge of impersonation, has been admitted to bail in the sum of GH¢20,000.00 with two sureties who must have a fixed place of abode. Parliament has called for parents to live up to their responsibility to children to help them to say no to drugs. They should properly supervise and shield them from bad peer pressure influence. Mr Kofi Amoakohene, Member of Parliament (MP) for Atebubu-Amantin, said this in a statement, presented on his behalf on the floor of the House by Mr. Collins Owusu-Amankwa, MP for Manhyia North, to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The theme for this year’s event is “Listen first-listening to children and youth is the first step to help them grow health and safe”. The day is used by member states of the United Nations (UN) to organize sensitization programmes to assist the people to have better understanding of the dangers and negative effects of drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
