Dr Nii Kotei Dzani, a Member of the Council of State has called for a national debate to review the current age of 40 years before one qualifies to be elected as President. It is up to you to bring it before the house, start a conversation,” in Accra. Dr Dzani made the call at the inauguration of the Young Parliamentarians Forum. The Young Parliamentarians Forum (YPF) is a non-partisan Union of the Parliament of Ghana to further the agenda of young people in Parliament. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and World Health Organisation (WHO) report has said most of these babies were born in low- and middle-income countries. The report, which was made available to the Ghana News Agency by Dr Paul Garwood, WHO, Geneva, noted that newborns who breastfed in the first hour of life were significantly more likely to survive. It said even a delay of a few hours after birth could pose life-threatening consequences. It indicated that skin-to-skin contact along with suckling at the breast stimulated the mother’s production of breast milk, including colostrum, also called the baby’s ‘first vaccine’, which was extremely rich in nutrients and antibodies. “When it comes to the start of breastfeeding, timing is everything. Nana Bakateyi who was speaking in an interview with Ghana News Agency on the sidelines of a sensitisation meeting between local government staff and rural women on Unpaid Care Work, said relegation of women to UCW was stifling their identity and their role in national and global development. She said reduction or redistribution of UCW would create opportunity for women to improve their social and economic lives and urged mothers and potential mothers to distribute domestic activities between boys and girls to lessen the burden of UCW among women. For the over six academic years of kindergarten (KG) and primary education at Teong, a community in the Garu-Tempani district of the Upper East Region of Ghana, Ms Vida Aputoi, sat on the bare ground to receive tuition. The eloquent young teenagerS did not also have access to write on a slate or any form of writing materials at KG as she had to contend with practising how to inscribe the alphabets and numerals with her right fingers on the bare creamy sandy ground. Vida says, the situation has not changed too much, because even after transiting from taking lessons under a tree at KG, to primary one and two, she still sits on the ground of a makeshift mud classroom. The facility, built over 10 years ago through a community-initiated effort, is a death-trap, as there are visible deep cracks on the walls and portions of the cement coat are worn-off.
